Live Long and Prosper

Monday, March 1st, 2010

In twelve days, my Mother turns 90.  All her children (and their spouses), all her grandchildren (and their spouses), and all her great-grandchildren will be getting together for a birthday celebration in Zions National Park.  On my Grandmother Rees’s side (the Munk family of Benson, UT) of the family, it is not unusual to be a nonagenarian and more.  Grandmother (Mother’s mother) lived to 101.  My Mother has an older brother who will turn 97 this year (his wife is also in her 90s).  Her older sister, Aunt Alda, is 93.

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

All three of my kids were married in a Mormon solemn ceremony. The most recent was 3 years ago when my eldest son married in the American Fork Temple. The wedding caused a bit of a local sensation. Both the bride and groom are identical twins. For the honeymoon, the pair were headed to Seattle where my future daughter-in-law was to undergo brain surgery.

My Grandfather’s Mormon Mission Vacations

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

On Monday, June 12, 1905, my grandfather (Dr. George LeRoy Rees) accompanied by his brother left Cache Valley for Salt Lake City:

“. . . there were no missionary schools or preparatory work and on June 13th in the Annex of the Salt Lake Temple was set apart by Apostle Francis M. Lyman for my mission. June 14th I left by train for New York City and from there to Boston where was to be my embarkation. This was an exciting trip. Big cities, skyscrapers and so many wonderful sights for I had never been outside the State of Utah before. From New York we were to sail on a beautiful vessel to Fall River, Rhode Island, and from there by train to Boston. At Boston we had the opportunity to observe many of the historic relics of Revolutionary Days, such as ship Constitution, Old South Church, Bunker Hill.”
